Introduction :

Why and how are LGBT literature and women’s literature from Taiwan more vibrant than those in other Asian countries? Many Taiwanese titles available in European languages clearly engage with representations of LGBT people and women. Does the legalization of same-sex marriage play a role in shaping the literary landscape?

Dr. Coraline Jortay (a scholar and translator based in Paris) and Dr. Chi Ta-wei (a science fiction writer and scholar based in Taipei) will explore these questions, with special attention to the French translations of books by Li Ang, Qiu Miaojin, Kevin Chen, Chen Kehua, and Chi Ta-wei. Chi will also contextualize these works through his overarching monograph on the history of queer literature in Taiwan.
