Résumé
« Chinese Drama : 100 Years On » offers a large scale study of Chinese drama. It introduces the traditional roots and evolution of “huaju” (literally meaning “spoken drama”), which differs from Chinese opera and is closer to Western-style theater and is dated back to the end of Qing dynasty. This book helps familiarizing oneself with the characters and the topics that are mainly dealt with on stage over the last century - historical and military drama, romantic stories, Beijing’s life stories, labour of countrymen, middle-aged love stories - until “huaju” diversifies in the aim of more commercial purposes, especially in big cities.
