Résumé
In his time, Konoshima Okoku (1877–1938) was a celebrated master of modern Japanese painting. He is particularly known for his depictions of animals. In recent years, the artist’s popularity has grown beyond typical admirers of Japanese-style painting, with renewed interest in his rigorous explorations of how to paint not only animal but also human and historical subjects. A broad selection of astonishingly detailed works spanning the entirety of the Kyoto-born artist’s career is presented in this book, from reverently portrayed forest creatures and mountainous landscapes to tense battle scenes and vivid kaleidoscopes of blossoms, branches, and grasses.
